Halacha 1: The Numbers Prepared for You

The Rambam says, “All the things that we have introduced”, all these things that we have now learned until now, from chapter 11 until chapter 16, is “in order that they should be ready and prepared for knowledge of the sighting”. They indeed didn’t want to just say how the moon travels, it’s not our topic, our topic is knowledge of the sighting.

Therefore the Rambam begins to say instructions how to do it. The Rambam says, “When you want to know this”, certainly you want to know, because you are indeed a heart prepared and a generous spirit. He says like this, “Begin and calculate”, begin to calculate, and they begin the previous calculations that I taught you, “and produce”, make the… no, produce is the language that the Rambam… yes, find, arrive at the conclusion, he calls produce, arrive, as one says “product” as if the… yes, product the number.

What is What?

First of all you will know “the true place of the sun”. Okay, where is the sun? In other words, you have arrived at a degree, yes? Halacha 2 – The Three Things That One Calculates for the Time of Sighting

A third thing you will calculate, “the place of the head for the time of sighting”. Orech Rishon

Rochav Rishon

The same thing, if so you know the place of the head, we have indeed learned, you know where the head is, which was learned the last chapter how one knew the head, this means from where the moon begins to go, from where it met the sun. And the place of the moon, and you also know what the place of the moon is, which was already now learned earlier, and the place of the moon.

You will also know the width of the moon. The width of the moon means with how many degrees the moon is to the north or to the south from the circle of the sun, as the Rambam called it. And he will know whether it is northern width or southern, all according to the chart that he gave the previous chapter. And this width you will call and it is called rochav rishon. Why? Because the width itself is also only approximate for one huge thing that we will soon learn. Therefore, if one wants a precise calculation, one will make a rochav sheni also. Halacha 3 – “Yizaher” – Why the Rambam Gives Names

The Rambam gives a name for each thing. I mean that today in math or in programming, you give a name for a variable. Let’s give it a name. Let’s give this a name, so you know what I’m talking about. Two Periods in the Year with Different Boundaries

Bameh devarim amurim, when are nine and fifteen the numbers? “When the true place of the sun was,” yes, the number that we calculate all the time that the sun is true. “From the beginning of mazal Gedi (Capricorn),” yes, they say approximately from Shevat, “until the end of mazal Te’omim (Gemini), approximately until Sivan,” that means six months from Gedi to Te’omim, six mazalot.

The Reason – The Tilt of the Moon’s Orbit

So the period from Gedi to Te’omim, then it’s initially higher, therefore it can be seen more easily. The period from Sartan to Keshet, is initially lower, therefore it’s harder to see, one needs, more is required, more space. That’s approximately the reason, it’s also common sense, everything here is common sense, I mean.

Discussion: Space or Time?

Halachot 5-6: Shinui HaMar’eh – The Foundation of Parallax

Memutza – The Middle of the Sphere

Correction of the Latitude – Me’aglei HaYare’ach (Third Latitude)

And I don’t have the strength to explain, it’s not possible to explain without looking at charts, and I don’t have prepared charts that can properly explain this. In any case, you must add the rochav to the orech, it’s not truly two… that is, it is originally two dimensions, but now what we want to calculate how long it will take for the moon to go down, is the same thing, because we understand that if it’s curved, it takes longer to go down. If it’s straight, it takes faster to go down. Yes? It’s a simple thing. Everyone understands that. So you need to know this.

Rule of North/South — Cancer until Sagittarius

Therefore the Rambam says, if it’s north, meaning higher, subtract the ma’aglei yareach from the second orech, and if it’s south, you add it. But this is only for half a year. This is when the moon is from the beginning of Capricorn until the end of Gemini. But if it’s from the beginning of Cancer until the end of Sagittarius, it’s reversed. If the moon is north, you add it, and if it’s south, you subtract it.

So this troubles one… and one must, with God’s help, if I will have the nerves sometime to show clearly the charts, we will understand this. I don’t believe anyone understands the why, but by the way, the Rambam himself didn’t say why, but he states a fact, and we understand more or less the Hebrew meaning of what he says.

Result — Orech Shlishi

Therefore now you have, after you have subtracted or added the rochav, which I call rochav shlishi, or what the Rambam calls ma’aglei yareach, from the orech sheni, you have a third number which is called orech shlishi. Yes? The Rambam says, you will know that not always, there is a time when there is no netiyat hama’agal (inclination of the circle), as the Rambam gave here when one doesn’t add, if I remember, he didn’t say by any of the… yes, for example, if it’s from the fifteenth in the constellation of Gemini, lo tosif velo tigra (neither add nor subtract), isn’t it, because this depends on which… again, where you hold on the circle, certain places it’s the same. Orech Revi’i — Correction According to Constellation
