Devarim Chapter 21

This lecture covers Deuteronomy Chapter 21, examining three distinct laws: the ritual of Egla Arufa (the beheaded calf) when a murder victim is found with no known killer, the regulations for taking a captive woman as a wife during war, and laws governing family life including the rights of the firstborn son and the rebellious son. These laws establish society’s collective responsibility for security and justice, require dignified treatment even of war captives, and set limits on both parental authority and the humiliation of executed criminals to preserve the sanctity of human life and prevent the land from being defiled.
