Neoplatonic Virtue: Does the Sun Rule the World?
In this lesson, we turn to paragraph 14 of Damascius' Commentary on the Phaedo, where we find opposing opinions between Proclus and Damascius on how exactly is the Sun the ruler of the world: is it because of his connection with Dionysos? Or is it his connection with Zeus? This leads me to give a 90 minute lecture on Proclus' solar theology, going into detail into the Platonic sources that suggest that the Sun is indeed "king of the visible" and in some sense "in the world, but not of the world"
