Neoplatonic Virtue: Astrology, the Daimon, and the Higher Self

Neoplatonic Virtue: Astrology, the Daimon, and the Higher Self

In this session, we conclude our reading of Book IX of De Mysteriis, where Iamblichus explores the role of the personal daimon and its connection to astrological fate. We compare Iamblichus' account of the daimon to Plotinus’ notion of the higher self, highlighting how both function as guiding presences that mediate between our current condition and a more divine mode of being. The daimon emerges here not just as a celestial assignation, but as the first stepping stone in the effort to understand the narrative of our lives and thereby participate in the Demiurge's authorial activitiy.
