Neoplatonic Virtue: Daimonic Tension
Yitzchok Lowy and I go through chapters 3,4 and 5 of Plotinus' On Our Allotted Daimon, which discuss PLotinus' variable theory of daimones, where there are many kind of daimones that are included in the soul, and the soul is capable of becoming a daimon and even a God, just as it can become a beast or a plant. We also talk about how the World Soul is a model soul in the senese that it is always united with its daimon/nous drawing on the Timaeus, the Alcibiades I and the Symposium. Finally we see how Plotinus allegorizes the choice of lives as a choice that happens during out lives and also sees the theory of daimones as indicating a fundamental structure of human action which always makes reference to a higher standard of goodness and thus is always in tension.
