Elements of Theology: On the Good and the Hierarchy of Goods
In this class, I explain Propositions 8-10 of Proclus' Elements of Theology. We discuss what does it mean for everything to desire the good, in what sense the Good itself is distinct from any being (and how Proclus' argument for that works), and how he uses his analysis of the Good to criticize Aristotle. I also show how proposition 9 introduces the idea of a hierarchy of superior and inferior that encompasses all beings, despite the fact that each being has its own good that it tends towards.
